Blunei represents a bold step into territory seldom explored in spray format. True Bruneian oud is among the rarest and most prized agarwood distillations in the world, with production costs often reaching extraordinary levels. A single gram of modern Brunei oud oil can command hundreds of dollars, and full batches can reach several thousand for only a few grams. This scarcity is precisely why very few perfume houses would attempt a spray based oud extrait of this origin. Yet Blunei exists because Bruneian oud deserves to be experienced in a way that allows it to reveal its evolution with movement and air. The oil I have used here was distilled six to seven years ago, matured into a refined and distinguished profile that cannot be rushed or replicated. Rather than relying on more common regional oud types such as Thai, Hindi, or Cambodi, I resolved to present Brunei oud as the central and defining force — not a supporting player, not a background note, but the unmistakable heart of the composition. To create balance and lift, I have combined the oud with a collection of precious naturals: blue lotus essential oil, ylang ylang, orris absolute, ambergris, and chamomile. These materials were chosen not to mask the oud but to set the stage for its entrance, providing an immediate brightness and radiant floral energy that prepares the wearer for what is to come.
The Experience
On first spray, Blunei opens with a vivid blue floral character that feels almost luminous — as though light itself has been captured and rendered in scent. The blue lotus leads, ethereal and aquatic, joined by the heady sweetness of ylang ylang and the honeyed softness of chamomile. This brightness persists for the first ten to fifteen minutes, a radiant introduction that demands attention. Then, gently, the composition begins to calm. The florals do not vanish but rather step aside, revealing the depth and warmth of the Bruneian oud that has been waiting beneath. There is a moment of transition that I find particularly beautiful — that point where the luminous gives way to the profound, where brightness yields to gravity. Over the following hours, the oud takes an increasingly prominent and commanding role. Its complexity unfolds in waves: now resinous, now honeyed, now touched with that particular smoky sweetness that distinguishes Bruneian distillations from all others. The ambergris lends an ethereal quality to the base, ensuring that even in its deepest moments the fragrance never feels heavy or oppressive. Blunei is the most complex and perfume-focused creation I have released under Ghallia Parfums to date. It demonstrates that oud can be both opulent and expressive without compromising its integrity — that rarity and wearability need not be opposing forces.
