Where should I even begin with this? The traditional Ghallia did not include vanilla in its composition, but if it had, this would have been the result. I will say it plainly: The Bourbon Royale is, in my estimation, the finest vanilla composition currently available on the market. This perfume was made for royalty, and it is fit for nothing less.
I have long resisted the temptation to create a vanilla-forward fragrance. The note has been so thoroughly abused by the industry — drowned in synthetic sweetness, buried beneath caramel clichés — that it seemed almost beyond redemption. But true Bourbon vanilla, handled with the reverence it deserves, is capable of extraordinary things. I set out to prove this, and what emerged exceeded even my own expectations.
If Michelin rated perfumes, The Bourbon Royale would earn three stars without question. It is technically flawless, emotionally resonant, and utterly distinctive. This is vanilla, but not as you know it.
The Experience
The opening is a glorious scent of aged vanilla wine — if such a thing existed, it would smell precisely like this. There is a richness here that borders on intoxicating, a hot buttery vanilla that feels regal and impossibly rich. Beneath this splendour sits a granular, powdery spice that adds texture and depth, preventing the sweetness from ever becoming cloying.
As the heart develops, the powerful and robust vanilla yields to something softer — a vanilla liquor quality that is smooth and refined. A perfectly balanced floral emerges at the edge of the vanilla, never competing but gently framing it, adding dimension without distraction. The transition is seamless, as though the fragrance is breathing, expanding, revealing new facets with each passing hour.
In the far dry down, something remarkable occurs. A purple and pink scent profile emerges that I have never encountered in any other perfume — a quality almost synaesthetic, as though colour itself has been translated into aroma. The composition continues to evolve, becoming ever more buttery and milky, suffused with a sweet vanilla essence that lingers on skin like a whispered promise. This is the vanilla of dreams, and it does not fade so much as it transforms, again and again, until the very last trace has disappeared.
