The Lale Devri

The Tulip Era

$39.99$475.00

The Lale Devri — the Tulip Era — was a period in Ottoman history during the eighteenth century when the Sultan’s court became captivated by art and the ancient Islamic tradition of maintaining exquisite flora and fauna within gardens designed to evoke the Paradise described in the Quran. Out of this milieu emerged one of the most celebrated achievements of Ottoman culture: the perfection of the tulip.

Those from Europe and the West are likely familiar with the tulipmania that gripped Holland during this same period, but less familiar with its origins in Istanbul. It was the Ottomans who first cultivated the tulip into the countless varieties that would later enchant the Dutch, and it was in the gardens of the Topkapi Palace that this flower achieved its most refined expression — slender, elegant, pointed at the petal’s tip like a dagger or a flame.

I set out to complement the horticultural art of this period, encapsulated in a perfume. The result is one of the finest and most striking floral compositions we have ever made. This is a fragrance that bridges two worlds: those who appreciate the highest luxury artisanal olfactory creations and those who prefer more accessible interpretations of floral scents. It speaks to both without compromising for either.

The Experience

The opening reveals a beautifully green floral note that I have not encountered in other similar compositions — a verdant freshness that is unmistakably tulip yet entirely its own. There is a quality here that evokes freshly washed clothes, that soft, almost musky clean-linen scent that is universally beloved yet so rarely captured authentically in perfumery. This is the result of the finest tulip essential oil used in the crafting of this composition, a material that is as rare as it is expressive.

As the heart develops, pink lotus and beeswax emerge to envelope the floral in a warm blanket, softening its edges without dulling its brilliance. Cocoa absolute and heliotrope add a sweet floral dimension — not gourmand, but gently powdered, like Turkish delight dusted with icing sugar. The effect is of standing in a walled garden at dusk, surrounded by blooms that are releasing their final perfume of the day.

In the base, eighty percent orris resin provides the depth and structure that transforms a beautiful floral into something truly luxurious. Civet adds an animalic warmth that grounds the composition, lending it staying power and a sensuality that lingers long after the greener notes have faded. What remains is the memory of paradise — or at least, of the paradise that the Ottoman sultans imagined when they walked among their tulips.
