Riddler is another limited edition release of only 40 bottles available on our website. This one started with a question: what happens when you pair a gorgeous purple accord with one of my favorite notes for the colder months, fir? The answer turned out to be intoxicating. I wanted to push both as far as possible, the purple and the fir, to bring a twist to a category that usually plays it safe. Most fir scents lean green and piney. Riddler leans purple, and it makes all the difference.
The magic is in the contrast. The semi-sweetness of the purple accord meets the holiday scent profile of fir, and together they bring the Christmas spirit a little early this year. It’s cozy and festive without being predictable, like pine boughs and dark fruit in the same room.
The opening is a juicy grape, raspberry, and black currant which bring a jammy, saturated purple sweetness, while bergamot adds a bright lift and clary sage brings a herbal freshness. It sets the purple / green colorway immediately.
In the heart, the purple accord and fir absolute meet face to face. Orris butter smooths the two together with a sharp, powdery, buttery elegance, magnolia lends a creamy floral touch, and rose and clove add a touch of spice that feels like a holiday melting pot. This is where the fragrance gets its twist: semi sweet and resinous at once, with neither one overpowering the other.
The base grounds everything in rich, dark woods. Papua oud, cedarwood, and jadewood build a smooth, woody foundation, patchouli adds an earthy depth, and black hemlock brings a deep, cool evergreen quality that enhances the fir from the heart and carries it through the drydown.
Riddler is purple, piney, and a little mysterious ???! If you want to start the holiday season early, this is your puzzle to solve.
